Heat pump servicing Whangarei you can count on
Salt off the harbour and damp Northland winters give heat pumps a hard life here. If we fitted yours, we'll keep it clean, quiet and heating like it should.
A heat pump service is a clean and check: filters, indoor and outdoor coils, drainage, gas pressure and airflow. In Whangarei's salt air and damp, do it yearly. We service the units we installed so we know exactly what we're working on.
Why heat pumps in Whangarei need regular attention
Salt-laden air off the harbour and Bream Bay eats into outdoor units. The aluminium fins corrode, the casing pits, and a unit that isn't rinsed and checked slowly loses grunt. Coastal homes in Onerahi, Ruakaka and Waipu cop the worst of it.
Inland it's the damp. Valley humidity through Tikipunga and Whau Valley clogs filters fast and gives mould a place to grow, so the air coming out smells musty and the indoor coil ices up. Older 1950s to 1970s bungalows often have units sited badly in the first place, which makes both problems worse.
A yearly clean and check catches this before it turns into a repair bill. A well sited, well maintained unit heats better and lasts longer than a bigger one left to fur up in the sea air.
What we check and clean on a service
A proper service is hands-on, not a quick look. Here's what we work through:
- Wash and refit the filters, and check the indoor coil for mould
- Rinse the outdoor coil and fins to clear salt and grime
- Clear the drain line so condensate isn't backing up
- Check gas pressure and look for signs of a leak
- Test airflow, temperatures and the electrical connections
- Check the outdoor unit's mounts and casing for corrosion
We service the heat pumps we installed
Straight up: we only service and repair units we fitted ourselves. We know how they were sized, where the pipework runs and what the outdoor unit has been sitting in, so we can sort a problem fast instead of guessing.
If your heat pump went in with someone else, we can't take it on for a service or repair. What we can do is quote you a new install and stand behind it. Getting the sizing and siting right is where most cold, noisy or short-lived units fall over, and it's the part we won't cut corners on. Have a look at the different types of heat pump to see what suits your place, or read how we handle heat pump installation.
Repairs when something's actually wrong
Sometimes a service turns up a real fault, or a unit stops heating altogether. For the heat pumps we installed, we handle Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps and the other brands we fit, from a failing fan motor to a refrigerant leak or a corroded outdoor unit.
If yours is old and gutless and repairs keep stacking up, we'll tell you plainly when it's better to replace it. A worn-out unit in a leaky coastal build sometimes isn't worth the money, and a new install can pay off in lower running costs. We'll walk you through the likely heat pump installation cost before you commit to anything.
For larger homes or multiple rooms we also look at ducted heat pump systems, and we cover heat pump installation across Whangarei and the coast. Not sure which way to go? Give us a call and we'll talk it through.

Heat pump servicing questions, answered
How often should a heat pump be serviced?
In Whangarei, once a year is the right call. The salt air on the coast and the damp inland mean filters and coils foul faster than in drier parts of the country. If your unit runs hard all winter or sits close to the sea, a yearly clean keeps it honest.
Why is my heat pump not heating properly?
Usually it's a clogged filter or an iced-up coil starving it of airflow, both common in our damp winters. It can also be low refrigerant from a slow leak, or an outdoor unit corroded by salt air. If a filter clean doesn't fix it and we installed the unit, get in touch.
Does servicing a heat pump reduce power bills?
It can help. A furred-up filter or coil makes the unit work harder to shift the same heat, so power use creeps up. A clean unit runs closer to how it was designed to. We won't put a dollar figure on it because it depends on your home and how hard you run it.
What does a heat pump service include?
We wash the filters, rinse the indoor and outdoor coils, clear the drain line, check gas pressure for leaks, and test airflow, temperatures and the electrical connections. On coastal units we also check the outdoor unit and mounts for corrosion from the sea air.
